Candle Box Dimensions: Standard Sizes for 4oz to 20oz Jars
The right candle box dimensions are measured to the jar — not to the lid, not to the shrink-sleeve, not to the shipping carton. Get the jar diameter and height right, add 1/8" to 1/4" clearance per axis, and the candle will sit snug in the box without rattling in transit or crushing the artwork on open. Here are the standard jar sizes US candle brands order and the box dimensions that fit each.
How to measure a candle for its box
Three numbers, measured to the jar:
- Jar diameter at the widest point (usually the lip of the lid).
- Jar height from base to lid.
- Lid thickness if the jar is screw-cap or threaded.
Then add 1/8" per axis for a snug retail fit, or 1/4" per axis if the candle will ship direct-to-consumer and needs a little extra give.
Standard candle jar sizes in the US
Most US candle brands build around a handful of standard glass jars. Here are the dimensions that come up most often in quote requests.
| Jar size | Jar diameter | Jar height | Typical box dimension (snug) | Typical box dimension (DTC ship) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 oz travel | 2.25" | 2.0" | 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.25" | 2.75 x 2.75 x 2.5" |
| 8 oz tin | 2.75" | 2.0" | 3 x 3 x 2.25" | 3.25 x 3.25 x 2.5" |
| 8 oz jar (status) | 3.0" | 3.5" | 3.25 x 3.25 x 3.75" | 3.5 x 3.5 x 4" |
| 10 oz libbey | 3.25" | 3.75" | 3.5 x 3.5 x 4" | 3.75 x 3.75 x 4.25" |
| 12 oz tumbler | 3.5" | 4.0" | 3.75 x 3.75 x 4.25" | 4 x 4 x 4.5" |
| 16 oz apothecary | 4.0" | 4.5" | 4.25 x 4.25 x 4.75" | 4.5 x 4.5 x 5" |
| 20 oz hex | 4.5" | 5.0" | 4.75 x 4.75 x 5.25" | 5 x 5 x 5.5" |
Clearance for scented candles
Scent is fat-soluble, and fragrance oil can transfer onto the inner wall of a tight-fit box over time. Two rules keep the box clean:
- Keep the lid on the jar — this is the primary scent barrier.
- If your fragrance load is above 10%, add a wax-paper or foil-faced liner on the inside of the box as an extra barrier.
For brands using heavy fragrance loads or vented jars, we recommend rigid setup boxes with a wrap sheet that creates a more complete seal than a folding carton.
Multi-candle gift set dimensions
Three common configurations:
- 2-pack side-by-side. Width = 2 x jar diameter + divider thickness + clearance. Insert = cardstock divider or EVA foam.
- 3-pack row. Width = 3 x jar diameter + 2 x divider + clearance.
- 4-pack square (2x2). Length = width = 2 x jar diameter + 1 divider + clearance. Great fit for 4oz travel candles.
Multi-candle sets usually warrant a rigid base-and-lid construction or a sleeve-and-tray — both support the heavier weight better than a tuck-end.

Frequently asked questions
What box fits an 8oz jar candle?
For a status 8oz with a 3" diameter and 3.5" height jar, a 3.25 x 3.25 x 3.75" tuck-end box fits snugly for retail; 3.5 x 3.5 x 4" works better for DTC shipping.
Do I need a tall candle box?
Only if the jar is tall. Match the box height to the jar + 1/8"–1/4" clearance. A box taller than the jar wastes material and ships oversized under dim-weight.
Should candle boxes have a window?
A window works when the color of the wax is the selling cue (coloured gel wax, layered candles). For most jarred soy and paraffin candles, the brand print is the primary visual and a window adds cost without adding sell-through.
What about tins? Different sizing?
Yes — tins are shorter and wider for the same capacity than glass jars. A 4oz travel tin is typically 2.75"–3" diameter at 2" tall; use the "8 oz tin" row above as the closest match.
