Why breathability matters for handmade soap

Cold-process and hot-process soaps keep curing for weeks after cutting. They slowly lose water and harden into a longer-lasting bar. Seal that bar in airtight plastic too early and the escaping moisture has nowhere to go. You get condensation, softening, and in high-superfat recipes the orange spots known as dreaded orange spot (DOS).

Paper wraps solve this. Kraft and glassine are porous enough to let vapor pass while still shielding the surface from dust, handling, and light scuffs. That is the core reason serious soapers reach for paper over film.

Glassine (usually 30–45 gsm) is smooth, semi-clear, and calendered so it is naturally grease-proof. That makes it the smart pick for oil-rich, heavily scented, or shea/cocoa-butter bars where seepage can stain a plain sheet.

Printed banding uses a heavier text or cover stock (about 90–120 gsm) so the band holds its shape and prints crisply. Many makers mix them – a glassine inner wrap with a printed paper band on top.

Which stock is best for oily or heavily fragranced bars?
