SBS cardboard paper — short for Solid Bleached Sulfate — is the white, bleached paperboard behind most of the premium printed boxes you see on US retail shelves. It is the stock we recommend when color accuracy, photo-grade printing, and a clean white interior matter: cosmetics, cereals, over-the-counter wellness, confectionery, and launch SKUs where the box has to carry the brand.

What is SBS cardboard paper?

SBS is a bleached chemical pulp paperboard made from virgin wood fibers that have been chemically processed to remove lignin, then bleached white. The result is a smooth, strong, bright-white sheet that takes CMYK offset ink and spot colors cleanly. SBS is also sometimes called "folding boxboard" or "SBB," though the chemistry is slightly different depending on grade.

In the printing world, SBS is the baseline for premium retail folding cartons — the stock you see when you pick up a cosmetic box, a cereal carton, or a small-batch supplement bottle box.

SBS weights explained (14pt to 24pt)

Paperboard thickness is measured in points (pt), where one point equals one thousandth of an inch. For folding cartons, SBS typically runs from 14pt up to 24pt.

  • 14pt & 16pt – standard for small retail cartons: lipstick, lip balm, sampler, business-card boxes.
  • 18pt – the all-purpose middle ground: cosmetic serum boxes, soap bars, candles.
  • 20pt & 22pt – stiffer and heavier: cereal boxes, supplement bottle boxes, mid-size retail.
  • 24pt – the premium top end: luxury rigid-feel without going full rigid; often used for over-the-counter and gift packaging.

Finishes that look best on SBS

The bright white face of SBS is why premium finishes read cleanly on it. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvet hand-feel; gloss and matte lamination both work. Spot UV creates visible contrast against a matte base, and gold, silver, and copper foil stamping pop against the white. Embossing and debossing both hold crisp detail on SBS because the fiber is uniform.

What to use SBS for

For natural, organic, or sustainability-forward lines, kraft is often the better choice — see our kraft boxes packaging guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is SBS cardboard paper used for?

SBS is used for folding cartons across cosmetic, cereal, pharma, bakery, candle, and confectionery categories. It is the standard premium white paperboard for retail boxes that need accurate full-color print.

Is SBS the same as cardstock?

Not exactly. "Cardstock" is a general term that covers any thick printable paper. SBS is a specific grade of cardstock made from bleached virgin fiber. All SBS is cardstock, but not all cardstock is SBS.

Is SBS recyclable?

Yes — SBS is widely accepted in US curbside paper recycling. Avoid plastic laminations (gloss or matte films) on sustainability-forward projects because they complicate recycling; opt for aqueous or soy-based coatings instead.

What SBS weight should I pick for a cosmetic box?

18pt SBS is the sweet spot for most 1–3 oz cosmetic SKUs. Go to 20–22pt for heavier jars or if you want the carton to feel sturdier on the shelf.
