Standard Box Sizes: A Reference for Common Packaging
There is no single “standard” box size – but common sizes by product type are a handy starting point. Use them to ballpark, then refine to your product. This reference is part of our how to measure guide.
Common sizes by use
| Use | Typical range (L x W x H) |
|---|---|
| Small retail carton | ~3–5″ on a side |
| E-commerce mailer | ~6 x 4 x 2″ up to ~12 x 9 x 4″ |
| Subscription box | ~8 x 6 x 3″ up to ~12 x 9 x 4″ |
| Shipping carton | ~10–18″ on the longest side |
These are ballparks, not rules – your product, not a chart, should set the size.
Why custom usually beats stock
A stock size that is “close enough” almost always means wasted space, more void fill, and higher shipping cost. Because we build to your exact dimensions with no die or plate fees, there is little reason to settle for a stock size. See how to measure.
Sizes for specific products
Some categories have well-known conventions – see our cake box sizes and mailer box sizes guides for those.
