Cake Box Dimensions: Perfect Sizing for Standard US Cakes
The right cake box dimensions are matched to the cake plus about 1/2" clearance on every axis. Enough room that frosting does not touch the lid or sides, little enough that the cake does not shift during delivery. Here are the standard US cake sizes and the matching box dimensions US bakeries order most often.
Why cake box dimensions matter
Three failures come from the wrong-sized box:
- Too tight. Frosting smears against the lid or walls on open. The customer sees a damaged cake and remembers the brand for the wrong reason.
- Too loose. The cake shifts in transit, the base slides off the drum, and decoration gets crushed from side impact.
- Too tall. You pay for dim-weight shipping on empty air.
Match the box to the cake + 1/2" clearance on height and 1/4"–1/2" on each side. For heavily piped buttercream, add another 1/4" to the height.
Standard round cake box dimensions
| Cake diameter | Cake height (typical) | Box dimension (plain) | Box dimension (tall / buttercream) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6" | 3–4" | 7 x 7 x 4" | 7 x 7 x 5" |
| 8" | 3–4" | 9 x 9 x 4" | 9 x 9 x 5" |
| 10" | 3–5" | 11 x 11 x 5" | 11 x 11 x 6" |
| 12" | 3–5" | 13 x 13 x 5" | 13 x 13 x 6" |
| 14" | 4–6" | 15 x 15 x 6" | 15 x 15 x 7" |
Standard sheet cake box dimensions
| Sheet cake size | Cake footprint | Box dimension (plain) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 sheet | 9 x 13" | 10 x 14 x 4" |
| 1/2 sheet | 12 x 18" | 14 x 19 x 4" |
| Full sheet | 18 x 24" | 19 x 25 x 5" |
Sheet cake boxes typically need double-wall corrugated board at these spans — a single-wall box will bow under the cake's weight.
Tiered and layered cake boxes
Two approaches for multi-tier cakes:
- Deliver assembled. Build a box tall enough to clear the top tier plus 1/2". A 3-tier 6"–8"–10" cake typically needs a 12 x 12 x 12" box.
- Deliver stacked. Each tier in its own box; the baker assembles at the venue. Smaller box per tier, less risk in transit.
Window placement
A window on a cake box lets the customer (or the caterer) see the decoration before opening. Window placement:
- Top window. The classic choice. Full view of the cake top decoration.
- Front window (side). Shows a layered or textured side of the cake.
- Skip the window. If the cake uses light-sensitive decorations (buttercream flowers, pulled sugar), the window exposes them to UV light and air during storage.

Material picks for cake boxes
- SBS white paperboard. The default for photo-forward cake branding and premium bakeries.
- Kraft board. Natural artisan read; great for farm-to-table and small-batch bakeries.
- Double-wall corrugated. For sheet cakes 1/2 sheet and up where single-wall will bow.
- Food-grade coated board. If grease-prone decoration (chocolate ganache) will touch the inside of the box.

Frequently asked questions
What size box fits an 8-inch cake?
9 x 9 x 4" for a standard 3–4" tall layered cake. Go to 9 x 9 x 5" if the cake has tall buttercream piping.
Do I need a cake drum inside the box?
Strongly recommended for cakes 8" and larger. The drum keeps the base firm, lets the baker lift the cake out cleanly, and prevents the cake from sliding during delivery.
What is the minimum order for custom cake boxes?
100 boxes at Packaging Vista. No die, plate, or setup fees — even for a custom size we build a free dieline on your dimensions.
Can one cake box fit multiple cake sizes?
Only if you add internal padding or a divider. Usually it is cleaner to order 100 of each standard size you sell — dim-weight savings on the smaller box pay back the extra inventory.
